Detroit traffic getting worse, new study shows

TomTom has released its 5th annual Traffic Index, a measurement of traffic congestion in more than 200 cities worldwide.

Detroit took the 29th spot in the study's ranking of the most traffic congested U.S. cities with an overall congestion level of 18%.

 The TomTom Traffic Index takes into account local roads and highways.

Detroit Traffic Statistics:       

- Key Detroit highlights from the 2014 TomTom Traffic Index include:

- Detroit traffic congestion increased 5%

- Delay per 30-minute driven in peak period: 16 minutes  

- Most congested day in 2014: January 2nd         

- Best weekly commute during peak period: Friday morning; Monday evening

- Worst weekly commute during peak period: Thursday morning; Thursday evening

- Delay per year with 30-minute commute: 63 hours

The top five worst U.S. cities for traffic include:
