A teacher in suburban Detroit has been honored with a $25,000 education award.
Mark Julien is an English and language arts teacher at Henry Ford II High School in the Detroit suburb of Sterling Heights. He's also on special assignment for Utica Community Schools and was given the Milken Educator Award at a surprise assembly Tuesday.
Julien teaches subjects including Advanced Placement English literature and composition, honors English and 10th-grade English. As part of his special assignment, Julien goes between schools working with teachers as an English Language Arts curriculum specialist.
Organizers say it's the first 2013 Milken Educator Award presented in the country and the only in Michigan.
The Milken Educator Awards were conceived by Lowell Milken to attract, retain and motivate talented teachers.
