Viral meningitis is usually caused by a stomach virus, and transmitted through bodily fluids. In a statement, the superintendent and district nurse warn parents that viral meningitis is not easily transmitted, and that in most cases, the germ will cause a cold, upset stomach, or diarrhea.

Anyone at any age can get viral meningitis, but it's more frequent in children. There's no method of prevention and antibiotics cannot treat it, so health experts recommend good personal hygiene to combat the infection.
