Suspected drunk driver leads police on 30-mile chase from Novi to Ypsilanti

Police: Chase starts when driver takes off after traffic stop on I-96 in Novi

NOVI, Mich. – At 2:30 a.m. Monday, it all started off as a routine traffic stop.

Novi police say the driver was zooming up Interstate 96 near Novi Road at 87 miles per hour. The officer on patrol said the 37-year-old man was acting strange when she asked him to step out of the car.

Dashcam video shows when the driver floored it. The officer jumped behind the wheel of her car and began chasing, but not before she called for backup.

You might expect a high-speed chase to ensue. However, video shows the driver wasn't going very fast at all. He just wouldn't stop.

Police say the man was drunk. He wouldn't stop even when Michigan State Troopers were on his tail. He picked up his speed.

At point police put out sticks. The driver lost a tire but kept on going. Police chased him from I-96 in Novi all the way to US-23, to the Michigan Avenue exit to Ecorse.

It was nearly 30 miles later when officers caught up with the man at his home on Wingate Boulevard in Ypsilanti.
