FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A suspected drunk driver hit a parked police cruiser Tuesday night in Farmington Hills.
The officer was tending to a traffic accident at Grand River Avenue and Ten Mile Road at about 10 p.m., waiting for a tow truck, when the crash happened.
Raymond Abruzzi, 44, of Brooklyn, New York, ran into the officer’s SUV and registered a .26 blood alcohol level, according to police.
Abruzzi was charged with Michigan’s super drunk law for a BAC over .17.
The officer was in the SUV with the cruiser lights flashing. The vehicle had new, ultra-bright lights installed.
“Today, with the technology, we have the brightest lights that are available and you still see police and fire trucks and emergency vehicles still getting hit,” Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus said.
The officer was injured and was taken to the hospital. Nebus said she was lucky she was wearing her seatbelt.
“The officer is at home recovering,” Nebus said. “We’re thankful it wasn’t worse and it’s a good reminder to wear a seatbelt, always.”
