Man stole tires in New Baltimore, fled police, crashed into brick wall

Suspect is parolee who was driving stolen pickup truck, police say

NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. – A 33-year-old Detroit man is facing charges after using a stolen pickup truck to steal tires from a home in New Baltimore before leading police on a chase that ended with him crashing into a brick wall, police said.

A woman on Brennan Street in New Baltimore called police around 3 a.m. Tuesday to report that she was watching a man stealing the tires off her Ford Explorer and putting them in a Ford pickup.

New Baltimore police officers responded and saw the stolen tires in the cab of the pickup, but the man refused to comply with officers' requests and took off.

Police said the man drove the pickup over lawns, onto I-94, and then onto 21 Mile Road.

Police used stop sticks to deflate the pickup's tires.

During the course of the chase, police said the pickup hit a Chesterfield Township police patrol car and stopped only when it hit a brick wall as it crossed Jefferson Avenue on 21 Mile Road.

Police said the suspect, identified as Derrick Lamar Brown, is a parolee. The pickup truck he was driving was reported stolen out of Sterling Heights in October, police said.

Brown is charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, larceny from a vehicle and operating with a suspended license.
