Suspicious package removed from federal building in Detroit

Bag picked up by bomb squad, destroyed in controlled explosion

DETROIT – A suspicious bag that was found outside the McNamara Federal Building in downtown Detroit early Thursday morning was destroyed by a bomb squad -- despite only being filled with clothes and papers.

Detroit's bomb squad, police and fire departments were called at about 6 a.m. to the building on Michigan Avenue.

The bomb squad removed the suspicious package and blew it open with a water cannon at 7:30 a.m.

Sources said there is video from security cameras that show someone throwing the bag down in front of the building.

Michigan Avenue between Third and Cass was shut down for about two hours. Hundreds of people weren't allowed into the building during that time.

The building is at 477 Michigan Avenue.
