Taylor To Close 2 Of 3 Fire Stations

Fire Chief Says Staffs Reduced In Recent Months, Hopes Closures Are Temporary

TAYLOR, Mich. – Taylor Fire Chief Bob Tompos told Local 4 Thursday that the city will close two of its three fire stations on Monday because of budget issues.

Tompos said 22 people have been cut from the Fire Department and EMS staffs in the last two months. He said all operations will now run out of the main station on Goddard Road.

"I have grave concerns," he said.

Taylor is 26 square miles. The north fire station on Ecorse Road near Beech Daly Road and the south station on Eureka Road near Telegraph Road will close indefinitely.

Without the stations, the average response time of 5 minutes could increase to 11 minutes or more, Tompos said.

"We're going to have an additional delay in response because it's going to take us longer to get where we need to go," he said. "That's why it was an advantage to have three stations."

Tompos said the city hopes the closings are only temporary.

Residents fear the Fire Department that they depend on will not arrive in time for emergencies.

"I did have a problem once and I had to call the fire truck and they were there immediately," said Larry Poletti, of Taylor. "So I would like that to happen again if there was a problem."

Tompos said he is trying to figure out a away to keep the stations.

"We'll keep working to try and resolve this situation," he said. "We hope something can be done. This is not the service we want to provide to our citizens."
