Teachers' group says it's planning another sick-out for Thursday

Some Detroit Public Schools may be closed, Steve Conn says

DETROIT – Some Detroit Public Schools may be closed Thursday, according to ousted Detroit Federation of Teachers president Steve Conn.

Conn said the Detroit Strike to Win Committee held a phone conference Wednesday evening that allegedly involved more than 100 teachers representing nearly all DPS schools.

Participants resolved unanimously to continue the protests Thursday and shut the schools again, Conn said.

Student and parent organizers also joined the conference. Conn said the conference also approved plans for the next Strike to Win meeting to be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at 9001 Linwood.

"Thursday night's meeting will vote on strike demands, including an end to Emergency Management, no more charters, return EAA schools to DPS, restore democratic rights to the people of Detroit, lower class size, raise teacher pay, provide adequate books and supplies, restore art, music and (physical education) in all our schools, and more," Conn said. "The struggle will continue until we have won justice for the people of Detroit."

"Teachers are going to force [Gov. Rick] Snyder to negotiate with our elected president, Steve Conn," said teacher Nicole Conaway, from East English Village.

At this time, it's not known how many DPS schools may be closed, if any.
