Teen charged in Brandon High School app threat

17-year-old senior faces 2 felony charges

ORTONVILLE, Mich. – A Brandon High School senior is charged with two felony counts which each carry a minimum of 20 years in prison after a shooting threat was posted to an app.

Detectives say 17-year-old Jacob Young posted threatening words Monday night to an app called "After School" saying he would shoot and kill everyone, and it would be bigger than the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Young was arraigned Thursday. He was alert and answered questions politely.

The threat prompted officials to increase security at the school. Many parents kept their kids home from school out of fear.

Authorities worked with the creators of the app to locate Young, who admitted to posting the threats because, he said, he wanted to bring attention to the way the app was used.

He is charged with making a terrorist threat and using a computer to commit a crime. He received a $50,000 cash/surety bond, no 10 percent. If released, he must be confined at home on a tether. He is not permitted to have contact with any students and is not allowed on school premises.

If convicted, Young will live his life as a felon.

The app no longer is available through app stores. However, there are similar apps.
