PONTIAC, Mich. – A 14-year-old boy has died a week after being shot at his friend's house.
The teenager was with a group of friends when a gun went off, hitting him in the back of the head. Investigators said it was Solomon Bonner's best friend who pulled the trigger.
The 14-year-old was a standout athlete, planning to attend Orchard Lake St. Mary's High School in the fall.
Coach Ken Wade consoled players after their quarterback and running back passed away. Bonner played for the Pontiac Panthers, a community football league.
"So boisterous, always stood out in the crowd," Wade said. "He was always smiling."
After fighting for his life for a week at Children's Hospital, news came the 15-year-old's condition worsened. Last week, Bonner was shot in the head by another teenager while inside a house in Pontiac.
"I'm still curious why they had guns. They're too young to be doing all that," Will Frazier said.
Frazier honored his friend by wearing a hat with a special meaning.
"When he got to the hospital, he had bracelet on, said worth the wait. Prayed for Solo worth the wait," Frazier said.
As police continue to investigate the now deadly shooting, Wade is dealing with the fact that the teen who shot Bonner also plays on the team.
"Originally what we heard it was an accident, but there are people speculating it wasn't, but we're just really praying for both families, everyone that's involved in this incident," Wade said. "Such a horrible thing. Two lives are changed forever."
Bonner's family is forced to deal with the tragic death.
"Trying to toughen up, but miss him," Frazier said.
The young shooter's mother is waiting to see if her son will face charges.
"But I've reached out to her to know she and her family are in my thoughts as well," Wade said.
