DETROIT -

Police had crime scene tape blocking off the area of Gratiot Avenue and 7 Mile Road where a 14-year-old girl was hit and killed by a car Friday morning.

A man was in a nearby restaurant when he heard the impact.

"It made me jump. So when I jumped I turned around, I was like, 'Wow,'" he said.

Police say the 33-year-old driver was headed northbound on Gratiot when he hit the teen. He didn't realize he hit anyone until he saw the girl in his rearview mirror laying in the street.

It was dark out at the time of the accident.

"You got to be more careful out here. It is not only you have to pay attention to your own life, you have to watch out for others as well, because there are crazy drivers out here who don't pay attention to street lights at all," said the man.

Witnesses say the girl had a backpack and was near a bus stop. A mother whose daughter takes the bus to and from school is praying for the teen's parents.

"I can just imagine how he or she is feeling right now to get the call that their child has been killed. That's unbelievable. That's a call you never want to get," said Tasha Jones.
