WOODHAVEN, Mich. - A lifeguard's best chance of saving someone is typically at a swimming pool.
For 18-year-old Cody Pratt, it happened at the Hibachi Buffet in Woodhaven. He heard a commotion at a table in the banquet room.
"I noticed a group scrambling. A lady was bent over choking," he said.
Pratt, who has two jobs as a lifeguard, recently completed a lifesaving course at Trenton High School where he was also a member of the swim team. The course included the Heimlich maneuver.
"I did it like three goods times. The last time she spit up the food and started gasping," he said.
The woman, believed to be in her 60s or 70s, recovered quickly. No 911 call was necessary.
"The training took over," said Pratt. "I didn't have to think at all."
The woman finished her meal and paid for Pratt's dinner.
