Redford Township teen shot Monday morning on way to Thurston High School

Police searching for suspect vehicle

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Darien McNeil, 17, was shot while walking to Thurston High School Monday morning.

The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. in the area of Kendall Street and Crosley Street, according to authorities.

McNeil told police a green four-door passenger car with black rims is the suspect vehicle. There were two suspects in the car.

"He basically said he was walking and a car pulled up and started shooting," said Roderick Parks, McNiel's stepfather. "He came into our bedroom to tell us he was leaving and we told him be safe," said Parks. "It wasn't 10 minutes later that he was back in the house saying somebody shot me."

McNeil was taken to a local hospital. Police say the high school senior did not receive life-threatening injuries in the incident. He was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.

"He said two shots, one hit his cell phone right around his side," said Parks. "He hasn't had any trouble recently, must have just been some kids up to no good."

South Redford School District Superintendent Kristina Harmon said a shelter-in-place has been lifted.

"We have been advised that we can release the shelter-in-place to all schools west of Plymouth Road," said Harmon.

The only schools still under lockdown are Thurston High School, Jane Addams Elementary and Shear Pre-School.

"We are working very closely with police on this investigation," said Harmon. "We have a wonderful relationship with Redford Township Police."

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
