Teens killed while fleeing Troy police

TROY, Mich. – It was in the early morning hours last July when Troy police attempted to pull over a Ford Mustang for reckless driving at Long Lake and John R road, but the 19-year-old driver kept going.

Also inside the car was a 19- year-old passenger.

In the dashcam video of two patrol cars obtained by Local 4, you see the officers following the Mustang. According to the police report, the driver was going at a high rate of speed.

Just as officers were about to call off the chase at the city's border, it ended abruptly at 19 Mile and Dequindre roads. That flash of light you see in the video is the Mustang crashing into a utility pole.

Just look at the extensive damage to the car. Officers had to contend with live wires as they tried to check on the people inside the car.

The 19-year-old driver died at the scene. The 19-year-old passenger was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Beside the car, officers found two liquor bottles. Investigators say alcohol might have been a factor in this crash.
