DETROIT - Two Detroit teenagers will stand trial for the shooting death of an 84-year-old security guard outside a church where Bible study was taking place.
Fifteen-year-old Anthony Williams and 18-year-old Alandre Boone are charged as adults with second-degree murder in Joseph Lewis' death on May 9.
Lewis was sitting in a car outside Victory Way Assembly Church of God in Christ when he was attacked. He was shot during a struggle. Police found Lewis' gun still in its holster.
Police say robbery may have been the motive.
11-year-old girl testifies about shooting
An 11-year-old Detroit girl, a toy in her hand, and her mother standing behind her, testified Thursday about seeing the murder of the 84-year-old church security guard.
The girl said she knew William and Boone from the neighborhood.
Shortly before the shooting on Tireman, she said she saw the teens enter and leave a nearby home.
She said Boone was wearing a light colored hoodie on the way in, but a dark one on the way out.
"I had a feeling something was going to go wrong," she said.
The girl testified that the defendants were standing within two feet of Lewis. Boone was looking around while Williams held a gun, she said.
"They was just standing there, and then the man was screaming for help," she testified. "They shot him and ran into the alley."
The girl was barely audible, and looked down during much of her testimony.
Judge issues warning
36th District Judge Ruth Carter ordered both teens to stand trial on charges of second degree murder. Williams is being tried as an adult. Both teens are being held without bond.
As the hearing ended, Carter warned the defendants' families about an earlier incident at the courthouse. The prosecutor gave no details, but said threats and intimidating behavior toward the witness's family would not be tolerated.
"Let it be," said Carter. "If you see them let it go. It doesn't matter what you think about them. Don't say it. Don't do it."
