Thieves caught stealing from unlocked cars in Macomb Township

Local 4 photojournalist alerts police to suspicious activity near 23 Mile, Card roads

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. Police always ask people to be aware of their surroundings and call if they see something suspicious.

A suspected crook is in jail thanks to a very alert neighbor. It happened at 23 Mile and Card roads in Macomb Township.

Local 4 news photojournalist Mike Tiseo lives nearby and while getting ready for his morning shift, he saw something odd and called the Macomb County Sheriff's Department.

"The car turned its lights off and came to a slow stop in front of one of the houses. I could see one person returning quickly from a house, " said Tiseo.

Macomb County deputies swarmed the Parkview Subdivision around 3 a.m. Tuesday and caught a 21-year-old Clinton Township going through unlocked cars while looking for anything to steal.

"I will let the ladies at the bus stop know to keep their eyes open too, " said neighbor Cindy Elwart.

Police say the man was using his pregnant 26-year-old girlfriend as his lookout. When arrested the man was found with a debit card stolen from one of the cars.

Taking things from a car may not seem like the crime of the century, but Elwart hit the nail on the head as to why she's concerned.

"I always ask my husband, 'Did you lock the car because the garage door openers are in there and they then can get into the house.' We always make sure they're locked," Elwart said.

After deputies made the arrests, they towed the suspects' car and even tracked down the owner of the debit card to return it to him.

Both suspects are now charged with breaking and entering and possession of a stolen debit card.
