In a statement Thursday, the team said a specialist in Colorado has recommended Iglesias be limited to non-weight bearing conditioning such as biking, swimming and upper body strengthening.
Dr. Thomas Clanton confirmed that Iglesias is suffering from bilateral tibial stress fractures and recommended he continue the treatment until he can be reevaluated at the four-month mark.
Iglesias said Monday that he's felt pain in both of his shins since spring training last year.
The Tigers acquired Iglesias during last season from Boston in a three-team trade.
Minus the 24-year-old Iglesias, the Tigers might fill his spot with a choice of three players already in camp -- Danny Worth, Hernan Perez and Eugenio Suarez.
Free agent shortstop Stephen Drew also is available, and Seattle infielder Nick Franklin is a possible trade target.
