Toddlers roam streets, special needs girl taken to hospital after mom leaves them home alone

Children now in custody of father

DETROIT – Police said a mother of two toddlers found roaming the streets Sunday is now home after police were searching for her.

According to police, the woman went to work and left her 14-year-old son in charge of a 13-year-old boy, 8-year-old special needs girl and two toddlers.

At some point, the teenager left the home and didn't come back. The 13-year-old got worried and went to look for his brother, leaving the special needs girl and younger siblings home alone, according to police. The 13-year-old didn't find his brother, but saw his friends playing basketball and joined in the game.

The two toddlers, a boy and a girl, wandered out of the house and were found by neighbors walking on Marseilles Street. The neighbors who saw the toddlers called police.

Officers found the 13-year-old, who refused to tell them where his mom works. They also found the 8-year-old in the home laying in bed.

Police located the children's father, who agreed to pick the children up. They are now in his custody.

The special needs girl was taken to the hospital as a precaution because she was having trouble breathing.

The 14-year-old returned home later Sunday night.
