Trash troubles piling up in Sterling Heights

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Trash and yard waste has been sitting by the curb in front of some Sterling Heights homes since Monday and city hall has been hearing about it.

“We’ve been getting calls non-stop,” Mayor Mike Taylor said. “Residents and whole neighborhoods are being missed.”

Sterling Heights has opted to go with a new trash hauler who starts next week. This week is the last of the old hauler’s contract and they have admitted to the city they didn’t staff adequately which is why residents are seeing an interruption in service.

“I am so annoyed, are you kidding me?” Malgosia Michalowska told Local 4. Half of her street has had the waste picked up while the other side hasn’t.

The only ones pleased with the situation are the raccoons.

Taylor wants those whose waste still hasn’t been picked up Friday to call the city’s DPW, and the city itself will pick it up.

“It’s not the DPW’s problem," Taylor said. "We’re under contract with Waste Management and they’re unfortunately not doing the job we’re paying them for so we’re going to get to the bottom of it.”
