Troy police: Brothers suspected in string of home, car break-ins

TROY, Mich. – Two brothers stand accused of being responsible for a string of car and home break-ins in Troy.

Police said Zachary and Robert Deming were arrested Wednesday after several residents in area of Crooks and Square Lake roads reporting having their homes broken into.

Police said the first call came just before 4 a.m. from the 6000 block of Riverton Drive - the homeowner wasn't home but an alarm system was triggered and muddy footprints were found inside the home. Nothing appeared to have been taken.

While officers were investigating that incident, another call came from the 6000 block of Denton Drive, where a homeowner reporting hearing someone knocking on the front door and more wet footprints on the porch - but no one was there.

Likewise, at about 5:45 a.m., police said a homeowner in the 6000 block of Basswood Drive said he woke up to someone standing in his bedroom and shining a flashlight in his face.

The stranger fled out a back door and police began chasing him on foot.

Police said the chase went on for an hour through a wooded area, including across a creek the man swam through.

He was eventually caught hiding under a deck and identified as Zachary Deming.

Police said Zachary's brother, Robert, was arrested for driving on a suspended license when he was spotted by officers monitoring the area during the reported break-ins.

They have been charged with home invasion and breaking and entering. However, police said there is evidence linking Zachary Deming to 16 car recent break-ins and more home break-ins in Troy and Royal Oak.
