Troy police warn residents of new IRS tax return scam

No reports of residents falling for scam

TROY, Mich. – Troy police say a new IRS scam regarding tax returns is hitting the area. Several people have called reporting the scam, saying that they've received real tax returns in the mail before even filing. Police say this means a scammer found personal information and tried to get the return sent to them, but failed.

Five people reported that someone filed a fraudulent tax return in their names and one claimed that he received a letter from the IRS indicating that his return was being reviewed, but he hadn't filed yet.

An officer at the department even got one of the calls. Police have not received any calls from a person that fell for the scam.
