TSA to tighten screening of electronics at Detroit Metro Airport

Airport visitors will be asked to separate electronics larger than cellphones

DETROIT – Officials are planning to test tighter screening of carry-on bags at 10 airports across the United States, including Detroit Metro Airport.

Airport visitors will have to separate electronic devices larger than a cellphone and other select items into a bin for screening.

TSA officials believe the increased screening could help officers identify problems by separating devices such as tablets and e-readers.

TSA officers said they don't believe this will create a slower process for travelers going through security screening. They said they're testing quicker procedures at the select airports.

Here are the airports included in the screening test:

  • Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
  • Boise Airport (BOI)
  • Colorado Springs Airport (COS)
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LBB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
  • McCarran International Airport (LAS)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
