Two people dead in Detroit house fire

Home on Melbourne caught fire early Sunday morning

DETROIT – Firefighters and police are on the scene of a house fire in Detroit that left two adults dead.

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. Sunday morning at the home located on Melbourne street, in between Brush and Oakland Avenue. Two adults and a 9-year-old boy were in the home at the time the fire started.

Glenn Lowe, the boy's uncle, helped rescue the child and was transported to the hospital. Firefighters say the teenager was awake and talking at the time. Lowe then re-entered the burning house, attempting to rescue Tonisha Lowe, who was blind. Neither one survived.

"[Glenn Lowe] was caring, he was loving, he loved.  He never asked for anything," said Camay Lowe, a relative of both victims. "Our whole family, we grew up together.  We are a strong family."

Detroit Fire Department Arson Investigator Capt. Patrick McNulty called Levy a hero for saving his nephew: "The hero turned out to be a victim.  When he went back in to get the visually impaired person out, that's a tragedy in anybody's book.   You feel it.  Everybody does."

Crews also told Local 4, as the house burned, it collapsed at a quick pace.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.

"We haven't identified any suspicious activity so far, but it's early in the investigation.  We'll be out here most of the day," said McNulty.
