U of M students robbed by men who asked to come inside home to charge phones

2 men steal cellphones, credit cards from students

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A warning was sent out to students at the University of Michigan Tuesday after two men got into an apartment with a gun and stole cellphones and credit cards.

Four students were inside the apartment at around 1 a.m. when the men broke in. The incident has students reconsidering their habits.

"When I looked more closely, I was a little surprised at how close it was," one student said.

Students were caught off guard when they received the safety alert about a home invasion on North Thayer Street.

Police said the two men asked to charge their cellphones at the home, but once inside, they showed a small gun and robbed the victims.

Police are reminding students to be aware of their surroundings, to walk with friends and to have keys ready in their hands when they return home or to a car. They said rooms and apartments should be locked at all times.
