HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – A 25-year-old man at the center of a kidnapping case of two women out of Hamtramck has been charged with a separate incident that involved them last month.
Brandon Cain is facing two counts of assault with intent to murder and other charges for allegedly shooting at 21-year-old Ashley Conaway and 18-year-old Abreeya Brown in early February.
If convicted, Cain faces life in prison without parole. He has a lawyer and sources tell Local 4 he's not been cooperating with police.
Conaway and Brown have been missing since Tuesday night when shots were exchanged with Brown's step-father. The women were forced at gunpoint into the trunk of a car and driven away. Nobody was hit in the shooting.
Cain is accused by family members of the women to be behind their abduction.
Police sources say they believe a burned-out, bullet-ridden Chrysler found on Detroit's west side was the car used in the kidnapping. Michigan State Police have processed the car and despite the VIN number being burned off police say they believe it is the suspect vehicle.
Investigators say the kidnapping stems from a love affair gone bad between Cain and Conaway.
The U.S. Marshals have joined the search.
Two other men are held as persons of interest in the case. Andre Michael Todd-Douglass, 34, turned himself in Wednesday morning. Police arrested 24-year-old Bryant Christopher Lee in Pontiac on Wednesday night. They have not been charged.
Sources tell Local 4 one of them has talked with police, but nobody has told them where the two women are.
The first shooting last month was allegedly over Conaway breaking up with Cain.
Police confirm that Conaway and Brown both went to police earlier this month accusing Cain of shooting at Conaway as she tried to get away from him, a bullet grazing her head.
Family members say Cain offered the girl's $5,000 in hush money not to testify against him.
Brown's mother said the women refused the money.
They will be key witnesses now that Cain in charged in that case.
Dozens of volunteers started distributing fliers around Hamtramck and Detroit with pictures of the two women asking anyone who knows something to call police or Crime Stoppers.
A $10,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the recovery of the women.
