DETROIT - The Michigan Democratic Party elected a new party chairman during a convention in Detroit Saturday. Lon Johnson was officially elected as the new chairman shortly after Mark Brewer announced that he was withdrawing from the race. The UAW issued this statement in response:
"The UAW congratulates Lon Johnson on his election as Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP). The UAW is committed to building a stronger party that reflects our values and diversity to win Democratic victories for Michigan's working families by building a broad, large coalition across the state and across many constituencies. The UAW is committed to working with Lon Johnson and the MDP in building a stronger party.
The UAW commends Mark Brewer for his years of dedicated service in leadership of the MDP for the past 18 years. We thank Mark for his courageous leadership in making sure the MDP remains united as we prepare for the fight in 2014 to protect all of Michigan's working families."
