UAW rank-and-file get two days to vote on new FCA agreement

Union condenses voting period from 2 weeks to 2 days

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is condensing the voting process on its new agreement with Fiat Chrysler to avoid some issues that led to the rejection of the first agreement.

Union members are scheduled to vote on the tentative deal next week on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22. The new schedule contrasts with the two-week voting process in September for the earlier agreement, in which earlier votes were leaked.

Informational meetings are being held this week for UAW members before the vote.

Workers voted no last time because many items in the contract were unclear to them. The communication between leadership and members needed to be better.

Two key items:

1. Workers will have a path to the higher Tier 1 wage over an 8-year period.

2. Tier 1 workers will get a $4,000 signing bonus while Tier 2 workers will get a $3,000 signing bonus.
