University of Michigan student sexually assaulted in Ann Arbor apartment

30-year-old man arrested

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A 19-year-old University of Michigan student was sexually assaulted in her apartment early Saturday, police said.

According to police, the victim was asleep in her apartment at the Landmark Apartments complex near South University and Forest avenues around 2 a.m. when she was assaulted by a stranger. Two roommates were asleep in other rooms at the time.

When the victim confronted the man, he fled, police said. She was treated at the University of Michigan hospital and released.

A 30-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested Saturday afternoon in connection with the assault. He is in the Washtenaw County Jail awaiting arraignment.

"It's not that surprising. We're barely off campus," said Sam Marks, a U of M student.

A key fob is needed to enter the apartments, but students said people often wait at the front entrance for someone to come in or out.

"You think you're safe when you're in your home but really you're not I guess," said Josh Kahn, who lives nearby.

The university is aware of what happened and would only say that it occurred off campus.
