Vehicle crashes after fleeing Detroit police; driver dies

Chief Craig says pursuit called off few blocks before crash

DETROIT – The driver of a vehicle fleeing Detroit police Thursday afternoon died after crashing into an abandoned house near Wyoming and Buena Vista avenues, just south of Interstate 96.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said officers had pulled over the vehicle for speeding. When they approached the vehicle they noticed weapons. The vehicle took off, fleeing from the officers.

Officers pursued the vehicle but terminated the pursuit a few blocks before it crashed into the abandoned house, said Craig.

The driver was killed and two passengers were transported to a hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time.

No officers were injured.

"The driver of the vehicle, who we had learned just recently was released from prison, was wearing a tether ... was pronounced (dead) at the scene, died from injuries," said Craig.
