Video depicts close call between officer and distracted driver

Driver says he was distracted by a child in his back seat

Police dashcam video shows the terrifying moment a Shelby Township police officer was nearly hit by a distracted driver during a routine traffic stop over the weekend. 

Video shows the officer conducing a traffic stop around 3 a.m., Sunday, when another car passes by the officer at a high rate of speed, missing him by mere inches.

The distracted driver said he was reaching to take care of a baby who was sitting in his back seat .

Shelby police say that's no excuse.

"This is why, this is why we want you to put down the phone this is why we don’t want you eating a cheeseburger, this is why we don’t want you talking to your kids in the back of the car” said Detective Leslie Heisler. 

"He could have died."

The driver was ticketed for reckless driving.
