Video shows man exit Royal Oak home after hours-long standoff with police

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A man has surrendered following an hours-long standoff overnight with Royal Oak police.

Local 4 is told multiple tear gas canisters were fired into the home before the man inside surrendered early Monday morning.

Eventually the man slowly exited wearing just his underwear and a T-shirt. He was directed to get down on the ground with his hands on his head.

He originally exited the home while talking on a phone. He went back inside and was ordered back out by police. He was arrested on the driveway.

Local 4 is told this started as a domestic dispute Sunday night at the home. A woman called police. Officers went to the home and the man refused to cooperate. That was about 11 p.m. Sunday. He finally came out about 5:32 a.m. Monday. Police had fired at least 25 tear gas canisters into the home.

There was a 10-year-old boy inside the home during the standoff. The boy was not harmed.

The situation had a portion of North Connecticut, which is in the area of Gardenia and Campbell, closed for hours.

Details from Royal Oak police

Royal Oak police released these details about the domestic situation:

A man suspected of domestic assault was taken into custody after initially refusing to come out of his home. At approximately 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017, Royal Oak Officers responded to a report of a domestic assault in the 900 block of N. Connecticut. The female caller said she had been assaulted and the suspect had chased her into a parked vehicle. The suspect was attempting to pry the car door open and fled back into the home after learning the police had been called.

Royal Oak Officers quickly responded and learned the suspect had made threatening statements regarding the welfare of the victim, himself, and  his 10-year-old child. The suspect also had access to a sword collection and a firearm. Officers entered the home, located he 10-year-old child, and brought him out to safety. While in the home the suspect refused to respond to officers commands and was believed to be hiding somewhere inside the house.

The Southeast Oakland SWAT Team was called in to respond. The suspect still refused to respond to officers who were attempting to make contact with him by phone and loudspeakers. Chemical munitions were deployed into the home and after seven hours, the suspect surrendered peacefully.

The female caller and the child were unharmed and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The Royal Oak Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating and formal charges will be sought upon the completion of the investigation.

“Once the child was safely removed from the house, the officers made the prudent decision to step back in an attempt to deescalate the situation. Although it took several hours, I am pleased we were able to resolve this volatile incident peacefully,” Chief Corrigan O’Donohue.
