SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Early Wednesday morning, a box van containing two passengers was caught on video slamming into the side of Action Impact at 25992 West Eight Mile Road in Southfield.
After backing the van into the building several times to create a hole in the wall, the driver and his one passenger parked the van and entered the store, stealing 22 firearms.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this crime. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) will also match any reward paid by ATF for a potential overall reward of up to $10,000.
"Our primary goal is to recover the stolen weapons to ensure that they are not used to harm anyone," Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins said. "I am confident that someone in the community will provide us with information that will not only help us locate the weapons, but lead to the arrest and convictions of the perpetrators of the crime."
"The theft of firearms from licensed gun dealers is a top priority for ATF," said Daryl McCrary, Acting Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the ATF Detroit Field Division. "This is a very serious crime; our experience shows us that these guns move swiftly when in the hands of violent criminals and are used in violent crimes. We also know that tips from the public have resulted in the recovery of stolen firearms."
ATF and the Southfield Police Department are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the individuals responsible.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Southfield Police Department at 248-796-5500 or ATF at 313-202-3400. Callers may also call ATF at 800-ATF-GUNS.
