Virgil Smith returns to Michigan Senate

LANSING, Mich. – State Sen. Virgil Smith (D-Detroit) has returned to the Michigan Capitol Tuesday, according to the Michigan Senate Majority Leader's office.

Smith hadn't shown up for work since he was arrested May 10 for a domestic incident that allegedly ended with Smith firing a rifle at his ex-wife's car.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Smith with felonious assault, malicious destruction of property $20,000 or more, domestic violence assault and battery and felony firearm.

After charges were filed, the Democratic Senate Caucus stripped Smith of his committee assignments and reassigned his staff. Smith's legislative website was also taken down and replaced with a single page reading: "Senator Virgil Smith's office will continue to be open and available to assist constituents of the 4th Senate district."

Smith was last seen publicly Friday, when he was in court briefly for a probable cause hearing.
