Volunteers step up search for gang rapists in Detroit

DETROIT – As police cruisers circled the block Friday night in Detroit volunteers made sure everyone got a good look at the men wanted by police.

"We have to do something," said Hassan Williams, a volunteer. "The police can't do it all. We are able-bodied. This is our community. At the end of the day when the police are gone, we are still living here."

The small group is determined. Whether they were stopping drivers or talking to people walking by, they didn't miss an opportunity to spread the word.

"It's about time somebody is getting up and starting to do something to help the people in our neighborhood because this is sad," said Tarhonda McBride.

Janice Walker is personally invested in this, having herself survived a sexual assault.

"To make a long story short: I've been there, done that, OK. And it sucks, for anybody to just take a woman against her will," said Walker.

This past Thursday two women were gang raped in front of the men they were with. The couples were attacked near McNichols Road and the Lodge Freeway.

"My heart goes out to each and every victim," said Walker.

As the search for these men continues volunteers have become frustrated and called out their neighbors.

"It's black-on-black crime out here," said Williams. "No one's out here. I just don't get that."
