Five Walled Lake police officers have been given layoff notices.
The layoffs come in the middle of a major budget battle between the city and the police union -- the Walled Lake Police Association.
The city says it’s dealing with a $10 million hole and has to make cuts to climb its way out.
"I am particularly disappointed to have to announce that the tentative labor agreement reached by the negotiating teams has been rejected by the union, “ aid Colleen Coogan, city finance and budget director. “Management believes that the tentative agreement was consistent with City Council’s goals of maintaining City service levels, limiting the impact on City staff, reducing the structural deficit and decreasing the debt levels."
Ed Jacques, the Director of Member Services for the police union told Local 4 there never was a tentative agreement or any contract negotiations. He believes this is a situation of unfair labor practice.
