MUSKEGON, Mich. - Police say a bear that reportedly was seen swimming in a West Michigan lake has been spotted near a bike path in Muskegon.
The Muskegon Chronicle and WGHN-AM report a portion of the bike path was closed Monday morning until further notice because of the bear. Authorities say they cornered the animal around midday Monday and hope to get it to leave the area.
Police described the animal as a black bear, and it caused a stir among area residents. First reports said it was seen swimming in Muskegon Lake.
The police department is working with the state Department of Natural Resources. Police are asking anyone who spots the bear to call 911.
The DNR says the bear apparently came from North Muskegon area before it swam across the lake.
