Warming center opens in Taylor due to power outages

DTE says all power should be restored Sunday morning

TAYLOR, Mich. – The Taylor Recreation Center opened at 8:30 a.m. Sunday as a warming center because of a power outage in the city.

The center is at 22805 Goddard Road near Pardee Road.

Residents can bring towels if they want to use the sauna or shower at the facility. Workout areas will be available, including the cardio room and walking track.

If you plan on using the shower, please remember to bring a lock for a locker.

The Taylor Sportsplex will also be open from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. There are open skating hours and other sporting events scheduled, and residents are welcome. The concession stands will also be open.

DTE says most of the 2,500 people that lost power have had their power restored, and the rest should be restored Sunday morning. The outage affected residents of Taylor, Southgate and Brownstown Township.

The outage was due to an equipment issue. DTE can't say for sure whether the issue was caused by the cold weather.

Temperatures in metro Detroit have prompted a wind chill warning until 12 p.m. and extreme cold is expected to last throughout the week.
