WARREN, Mich. – The city of Warren is known for enforcing strict rules with regard to fireworks. Mayor Jim Fouts took to the streets Saturday night to make sure everyone follows the rules.

Fouts rode with police through Warren neighborhoods. Fouts spoke candidly with people about his city-wide fireworks regulations.

One exchange happened while dozens of fireworks were being ignited across a neighborhood near Nine Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.

People told Local 4 that they understand the safety concerns, that minors or people who have been drinking or doing drugs shouldn't be setting off fireworks.

The mayor does not support the 2012 fireworks law passed by the state Legislature, making him the only mayor in Michigan to take an aggressive stance against fireworks.

Violators could get a ticket of $500 or 90 days in jail.

The mayor and police gave warnings Saturday evening, but once it turned 11 p.m., the regulation was enforced.

Warren police support the initiative, saying there is a public safety concern and that their resources are already stretched thin during holidays.
