Victim says attackers recognized her from news when she married her partner

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 28-year-old Michigan woman is recovering after being beaten in an apparent hate crime over her recent marriage to her partner.

In a statement, the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said the woman was walking Monday evening through an apartment parking lot on Roundtree Boulevard in Ypsilanti Township when she was approached by three men.

One of the men said, "Hey (expletive). Are you that (expletive) from the news?"

The Sheriff's Office said the woman was then punched in the face, knocked to the ground, and kicked in her torso.

The woman had recently been on the news for marrying her female partner during the brief time that same-sex marriage was legal in Michigan on March 22. An appellate court has since issued a stay on same-sex marriages.

The Sheriff's Office described one of the men as white, mid-20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, heavy-set, with a low or husky voice.

The others could not be identified.
