Wayne County executive to seek re-election

Robert Ficano to make announcement Monday

DETROIT – Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano plans to kick off his re-election campaign on Monday.

The Democrat has scheduled a news conference in Detroit at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 58, where supporters are expected to gather.

For the first time in a very long time, Ficano faces a crowded primary with challengers hoping to unseat him.

After more than two years of scandals plaguing his administration, Ficano is running again -- to the surprise of no one.

First elected in 2002, Ficano's seeking his fourth term. Wayne County Dems have been jockeying for position since the Turkia Mullin story broke, perceiving Ficano as weak. They're not wrong -- polling down over the last two years shows he's got problems.

But a crowded primary field means he can't be counted out.

"It's sort of the roll of the last dice that your base sees you through," said political strategist Dennis Darnoi.

Current Wayne County Commissioner Kevin McNamara. State Rep. Phil Cavanagh and Westland Mayor William Wilde are currently in. So far it's Wilde who is coming out in a big way with his billboards everywhere. But when your name recognition is low, you really don't have any other choice.

Ficano previously served as sheriff of Wayne County.
