DETRPOT – An inmate who stabbed a Wayne County Sheriff's deputy with a sharpened comb in a holding cell Monday morning before escaping from the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice was charged Friday with 12 criminal counts stemming from the assault and escape.
The new charges are:
- Assault with intent to murder
- Carjacking
- Assault/resisting/obstructing causing serious impairment to a police officer
- Assault of a prison employee
- Unlawful imprisonment
- Escape – from jail through violence
- Impersonating peace officer to commit crime
- Weapons – dangerous weapon – carrying with unlawful intent
- Possession of weapon in jail
- Obstruction of justice
- Armed robbery
Abraham Pearson could face up to life in prison if convicted of an assortment of charges that includes assault with intent to murder, carjacking and escape from custody. Pearson, 25, was charged as a habitual offender with three prior convictions.
The arraignment was done by video with 36th District Court and the Wayne County Jail. Pearson was remanded without bond to await a preliminary exam September 23.
Pearson, who has used the alias Derreck White, attacked Deputy Harrison Tolliver on Monday morning as Pearson faced sentencing for carjacking and armed robbery. Sentencing for those crimes has been rescheduled for September 23.
Pearson also carjacked a civilian during the escape, which prompted a day-long police manhunt. He was arrested following a brief foot chase with police Monday night on the east side of Detroit.
Tolliver, 63, was treated for injuries and released from Detroit Receiving Hospital on Monday.
