Wayne County to offer house subsidies

Offering up to $7,500 to eligible first-time homebuyers

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – The Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency will begin offering up to $7,500 in down payment assistance funds to eligible first-time homebuyers.

The program will be offered in 10 Wayne County communities: Brownstown Township, Gibraltar, Hamtramck, Melvindale, Riverview, Rockwood, Romulus, Southgate, Wayne, and Woodhaven.

In order to be eligible for the program, prospective homebuyers must purchase a home in one of the 10 aforementioned communities and the home must be their primary residence for at least five years.

Qualified participants must also complete eight hours of homebuyer education instruction and attend counseling sessions with a financial coach.

Wayne Metro Chief Executive Offer Louis D. Piszker says that the subsidies are there to help people who wouldn't otherwise be able to own their own home.

"For many, becoming a homeowner is achieving the American Dream.  For some, this dream is never realized because they feel it is out of reach….either they think they don't make enough money or their credit is beyond repair," said Piszker. "With interest rates and housing prices, it can be more affordable to buy than rent. Coming up with a down payment can be challenging and $7,500 from a program like ours can help get people past that barrier."
