Westland firefighter missing at scene of strip mall fire on North Wayne Road

Fire breaks out Tuesday morning, destroys 2 businesses

WESTLAND, Mich. – A Westland firefighter is missing at the scene of a fire in a strip mall in Westland, west of Detroit.

The firefighter went missing at about 9:30 a.m. while helping battle a blaze that broke out at the building on North Wayne Road.

A search and rescue team is searching for a firefighter who went missing after a roof collapsed to the burning strip mall.

Wayne-Westland Deputy Fire Chief Robert Arbini tells WWJ-AM that searchers are doing what's needed "to find that person."

Firefighters from Inkster and Garden City are helping secure the fire scene. Two businesses inside the mall, the Electric Stick and Marvaso's, are total losses.

Crews had the fire under control by noon. The name of the missing firefighter wasn't released.
