Westland gas station canopy collapses during storm

No one injured in collapse at BP gas station

WESTLAND, Mich. – Friday's storm came in fast and left almost as quickly, but after high winds, lightning and hail, there was limb damage throughout the city of Westland, plenty of downed power lines and a BP gas station canopy, which collapsed on top of several cars.

Those who work in the plaza where the gas station is located didn't hear the collapse, because hail was hitting the windows so hard.

Witnesses told Local 4 News they saw what appeared to be wind in rotation in the parking lot. When the storm cleared, the canopy had collapsed.

"I just ran through the flooded parking lot trying to help, and a pregnant woman grabbed my arm and asked me to help her," Robert Kelly told Local 4.

Kelly turned her car off, which was under the crushed canopy, and went to help another woman when Westland firefighters arrived on the scene and took over.

Remarkably, no one was injured in the canopy collapse.

The fire department was hopping from one scene to another, including two on Christine Street, where downed power lines caused a garage fire.
