Westland senior apartment complex hit by TV thief for 2nd time

Westland police believe same man stole TVs from other senior complexes

WESTLAND, Mich. – At 3:30 a.m. Monday, July 20, a man dressed in a security jacket was strolling through Greenwood Villa in search of big game -- big as in 50-inch and 60-inch TVs.

However, unlike his previous theft in March, this time he found it wouldn't be that easy.

"They took security measures and put cables on to try to prevent this from happening again, and the subject used bolt cutters to cut down the security guards," said Sgt. Robert Wilkie, with the Westland Police Department.

The thief liberated the big screens with the bolt cutters one at a time. At one point he was balancing a TV on his head as he struggled to carry it.

"It's disgusting. The city of Westland protects all of its citizens, especially its most vulnerable like the elderly, so we take this to heart a little bit more," said Wilkie.

Kathy Walker has lived in Greenwood Villa for about 4.5 years. She is often part of large groups which get together for movie nights.

"How low can you go?" she said. "We have some people here who don't have TVs. We have some people that don't have cable. And we have three people that sit down here faithfully to watch the sports in the evening and the sports on the weekends and everything, and now they're listening to the radio."

People at Greenwood Villa are afraid to replace the TVs until a new security system is in place.

"How can it happen twice?" said Walker. "I guess people are so desperate."

The same thief is suspected of stealing TVs from two other senior complexes. Police are working to connect the cases.
