Pregnant woman shot; boy attacked by family dog; firefighter dies

DETROIT – The excitement of the holiday is over, but the excitement in Detroit didn't slow down. Here's a look at some of the week's top headlines from ClickOnDetroit.com.

Pregnant woman hit by gunfire while watching fireworks

A 28-year-old Auburn Hills woman never imagined she would be spending the final weeks of her pregnancy recovering from a gunshot wound. 

"I'm just thankful to be alive, and thankful that my daughter is alive," the woman, who asked only to be identified as Victoria, told Local 4 during an interview Monday. She is due in September to give birth to a girl. 

Victoria and her boyfriend, Anthony Williams, were watching a fireworks shows Friday from a spot at Woodward Avenue and South Boulevard in Pontiac when gunfire erupted. 

"I kind of looked over and I saw a woman standing there. That's when I felt something hit my face," Victoria said.

Video shows aftermath of Melvindale gas explosion

Aerial footage showing the charred aftermath from the Melvindale explosion which occurred early Saturday morning around 3 a.m.

The explosion happened after a vehicle crashed into a DTE building in Melvindale near Allen and Greenfield roads, rupturing a gas line in the process.

Two buildings sustained damage but no injuries were reported at the facility.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn. His condition is currently unknown.

Edsel Ford II's wife responds to domestic abuse allegations

The wife of Edsel Ford II released a statement late Tuesday night regarding the allegations of domestic violence against her husband. 

The great-grandson of Henry Ford was arrested Monday night after his wife called 911 to report a domestic dispute between her and her husband. 

Ford was later released from police custody at about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick takes to social media to rant

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick took to social media via his brother-in-law’s Facebook account to express his frustration toward everyone in involved with his case from the police, media and state prosecutor Kym Worthy.

The lengthy letter was posted Tuesday night on his brother-in-law’s Facebook.

In the letter, the former mayor described his newfound commitment to God and said he believes that the city is full with nothing but corruption.

He also described rumors the he said the media perpetuated.

10-year-old boy attacked by family dog

A 10-year-old Augusta Township boy is recovering after being attacked Wednesday by the family dog in their home. 

Police said the boy was home alone on Stony Creek Road when dog, described as a pit bull-type breed, attacked him. 

The boy was able to reach a neighbor's home for help. 

“I heard something hit my door and I got up and looked and I saw him lying on the porch,” Melody Rittenhouse said. “I called 911 and my neighbor came over to help.”

Pilot, 9-year-old grandson die in small plane crash

A pilot and his 9-year-old grandson passenger were been killed in a small plane crash near a private airstrip in mid-Michigan.

The plane went down Sunday evening in a Frankenmuth Township field and burst into flames, just east of the Tiny Zehnder Air Field. 

Witnesses told police the pilot had kept his aircraft at the air field, and was holding a birthday party at his hanger.

Harrison Township firefighter dies following surgery

Surrounded by friends, family and their firefighting family, Clara Russell said she was probably one of the few who didn't call her husband Moose.

Inside Station 1 in Harrison Township, Lt. Andrew "Moose" Russell's gear sits untouched, as it will for a while to come.

Early this year, while on a medical call, Russell fell on ice and damaged his shoulder so severely it needed to be replaced. That surgery finally happened on Monday of last week, and he went home Wednesday.

He started feeling sick Saturday and told his wife to call 911, but it was too late.

Oakland County mosquito pool tests positive for West Nile Virus

The first mosquito pool testing positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) has been found in a trap set in Oakland County, the Health Department said Tuesday. 

Compared to last year, this is earlier in the summer season for a mosquito to test positive for the WNV, the Health Department said.

“Although no human cases of the virus have been confirmed in Oakland County this year, residents are urged to be cautious when spending time outdoors,” said Kathy Forzley, Oakland County Health Division manager/health officer. “The most effective way to protect yourself and your family against West Nile Virus is to take precautions against mosquito bites.”

Father, teacher die when kayak sinks

A Fourth of July holiday weekend kayak trip ended in tragedy for an Ann Arbor family.

Christopher Peterson, 42, died after a kayaking accident Sunday in Lake Huron.

Peterson was with his wife and their two sons, ages 5 and 8, when their kayak started taking on water.

The family had set out from Eagle Bay at the northern tip of Michigan's Thumb region. They were about one-quarter mile east of Turnip Rock when the kayak sunk.
