What's taking so long to get power restored?

DETROIT – For 83,000 people in Metro Detroit, it's now been more than 24 hours since they last had power.

DTE Energy crews are working 16-hour shifts to restore service knocked out by Sunday's storms, but it could be another few days before everyone's power is turned back on.

Most of the businesses along Highland Road in Waterford are still in the dark. In the neighborhoods, there's a chorus of generators.

Sunday night's storms produced winds above 70 mph in some areas, leaving a 180,000 customers without power.

And while area DTE crews are out in full for force, they have called in an extra 240 linemen from surrounding states.

"When we dispatch outage projects, we start with the largest number of customers out on a circuit down to the smallest number. You try to restore the most customers you can on the biggest jobs," said Trevor Lauer, the vice president of distribution operations at DTE.
