"Judge Berg came through his surgery well. He is on the road to recovery and hopes you'll respect his privacy."

Two men, described as black males approximately 18-25 years old, approached Berg outside his Detroit home Thursday night and one of them shot him in the leg. The assailants reportedly fled in a dark sedan, possibly a Dodge Charger.

The FBI announced Friday afternoon that it is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the shooting.

Berg was nominated by President Barack Obama in April 2012 to serve as judge on the U.S. District Court, according to the University District Community Association.

Berg became an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan in 1989. He headed the Michigan attorney general's high-tech crime unit from 1999 to 2003 and served as Detroit's interim U.S. attorney from 2008 to 2010.
