Sterling Heights family's home a total loss after fire

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Two young children were taken to the hospital Sunday morning after a fire started in their home while their parents were asleep.

While their home is a total loss and all their possessions were burned beyond recognition, Matt and Heather said they are blessed.

Matt said he woke up Sunday morning with his son, 5-year-old Madden, his baby girl and 2-year-old London. The kids were playing in the living room. When Matt went back into his bedroom the hallway was filled with smoke.

The family, wearing little more then their pajamas, watched in horror as their house burned down.

The Sterling Heights Fire Department told Local 4 the fire began in the kitchen. Madden was trying to light a candle and the fire spread.

Madden had minor injuries on his hand and told his family he tried putting out the fire with nearby water bottles.

Officials said it's a reminder to keep children away from candles and matches.

The family said thankfully they have homeowners insurance, but they're still going to have to start over.

Sunday afternoon they were out buying a backpack for Madden, who doesn't have one for school Monday.

The family said they'll be staying at Matt's mother's home.

Officials said the smoke detectors in the home did not go off.
